Clash Of The Titans
2010-04-02

Back before Liam was born the family decided to have a movie day. I wanted to see Clash of the Titans. The females did not. They wanted to see that Miley Sirus movie. I'd rather set my eyebrows on fire. So the guys went to see a fun movie and the girls went to cry. I'd cry too if I paid to see Miley.

Plot: It's a remake of one of my favorite childhood memories. The Gods are annoyed at the humans, because the humans are being insolent. So Hades kills some people, including the adoptive family of one of Zeus' kids. So the kid goes after Hades. There's a Kraken and some cool special effects and no crying.

What I thought: We ended up seeing it in 3D. I had read that it wasn't worth the 3D, but we caught a matinee and that's all that was playing. The 3D was ok, but not worth the extra money. It ended up costing more that a regular 2D movie would have cost. That's annoying.

What I thought of the movie: It was a lot of fun. I remember really liking the original in the theaters, but I was like 6 when it came out so I didn't remember all the plot. Seeing it again was good because I knew the good guy would win and I knew the Cliff Notes version, but the details were fresh and exciting.

Should you see it? Yes, but watch it in 2D. Make the studios put effort into the 3D if they expect us to pony up some extra cash.

Shutter Island
2010-02-19

Last night Olga and I were sitting around. Since the baby wasn't born we decided to have a date night. We started with a great tapas restaurant in Crystal City, then headed over to the theater in Alexandria, because the Waldorf theater is too ghetto. And there has been gang activity around there recently.

Plot: Leo DeCap is a US Marshall who goes to an island for the criminally insane. He goes to the island with a new partner to investigate a inmate who has disappeared into thin air. There's a hurricane and a bunch of flash backs to a German concentration camp. Then a plot twist and you'll have to see it for yourself.

What I thought: It had it's moments. But then the trailers were over and the movie started. They dragged it out a little too much in the in the middle. Another great hour and a half movie that lasted two hours. I liked the plot twist in the end, but getting there was a little boring at times. And it wasn't as dramatic as it could have been.

During the credits it said it was based on a novel. I bet this is another case where the novel is incredible, but the movie is kinda mediocre.

Should you see it? Don't pay full admission for the theater. Netflix it.

Now I shall digress.

Theaters suck. The sound was going in and out on one of the side channels. It wasn't horrible, but it was distracting. I think the digital projector had problems and they switched to an analog one. Still not horrible, but a little out of focus and distracting.

And I just read an article saying they were thinking about raising the price of tickets. The justification is that people are buying the tickets and it's a relatively cheap form of entertainment.

Um, what?

Since when have theaters been a cheap form of entertainment? Not since I've been old enough to pay for them. I can buy a full priced blue ray disk and have money left over for what it costs to take my family to the movies. And I'm just talking about the ticket prices, Heaven help us if someone wants to eat something there. And I'm also not talking about the 3D movies, where they charge an extra $5 per ticket (at least).

Wow, I just realized I can probably buy 2 blue ray disks for the price of taking the family to a 3D movie. Suddenly our home theater room seems extremely cost efficient. Especially when we can watch movies over the network through Netflix.

And my family is about to increase by one.
