Walk the Line
2005-11-18

I'm Batman

No wait, I'm the other guy who dresses in all black...

Hello, I'm Johnny Cash

When I was in college I drove to North Carolina to meet up with drmellow and some other people. We headed down to South Carolina to see Johnny Cash perform at the House of Blues. I think that's the farthest I've ever gone specifically for a concert. It was awesome. There was even a mosh pit and some kid got up on stage during the performance. So in honor of that memory I decided to go back to NC and join drmellow and yarbiedoll in watching Walk The Line.

Plot: Sex, drugs, rock and roll rockabilly. (That's hillbilly rock for those not in the know). If you've seen VH1's behind the music on any band you've got the main gist of every other band's story. Johnny just performed his story on the same stage as Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis.

What I thought: It was a fantastic movie. Ms Witherspoon is smoking. The music was great (even though the actors did the singing it was still real good). It was a better movie than I thought it would be.

Should you see it? Yes. Even if you aren't a big fan of the music it is still a good story.

Jarhead
2005-11-04

Last night a few friends went to see Jarhead. I had heard great stuff about it, so I went with them.

Plot: Desert Shield. Desert Storm. Moral of the story - don't be in the military during a war.

What I thought: It sucked. The best part was when they were showing the GIs watching Apocalypse Now. The reason that part was good was because you got to see parts of Apocalypse Now, which is a good movie. The worst part of Jarhead was right after they quit showing the Apocalypse Now clips, because you were reminded that you were still watching Jarhead and not Apocalypse Now.

Should you see it: No. Wait until it Fox plays it on network TV.

Batman Begins
2005-06-15

I'm Batman

Actually, I'm just skipping work, because I got sick last night from eating poisoned cheesecake and fish. So I sent my boss an email, slept in then got up and watched the movie. In this experiment I learned that work > work. I sure do wish I was retired or maybe just independently wealthy. Unfortunately the NASDAQ was pretty down today, so it looks like I'm gonna have to go to work on Mon.

Plot: Batman begins. It's all right there in the title. The unabridged version of the plot goes like this: Kid watches parents die. Kid becomes Batman. Criminals become screwed. The elongated unabridged version of the plot includes far off lands with interesting characters, but is completely lacking in monkeys. Lots of bats, but no monkeys. Not even a picture of a monkey that I saw. It's possible there were monkeys in the background, but I don't remember seeing them and that's what counts when you spend a bunch of money making a movie.

This Batman movie included Scarecrow and that Ras or Raz fellow. I like both of them, but they aren't superstar evil guys like the Joker or Poison Ivy. I think they should have done more with Scarecrow. He has a lot of potential, which I didn't think was tapped in this movie. I like the actor playing Scarecrow. He did an upstanding job. Now that I think about it, all the actors did real good jobs with the roles.

What I thought: It was great for a Batman movie, second only to the first Batman movie. So I guess now we'll see about six or seven stupid Batman movies, then they'll make another good one. One day I'll be able to tell my children that I saw the original Batman in the theaters. They'll probably just stare at me like I'm disgusting and crazy because I'll be wearing my Poison Ivy outfit.

I also want to point all the Christian Bale fans out there to a movie he did in 2002 called Equilibrium. That movie was AWESOME!!! The fight scenes were incredible. I wasn't that impressed with the fight scenes in Batman Begins, which was a bit of a disappointment for me.

Should you see it? Yes. Yes, indeed.

The Longest Yard
2005-05-27

Erik and I went to see The Longest Yard. We were supposed to go to yoga, then play racketball but I'm getting old and my back hurt. My eye also has a nervous twitch, but this review isn't about me.

Plot: Adam Sandler is married to Courteney Cox (who dressed great for her performance). They split up when Adam crashes her car and dumps her. Then he goes to jail. While in jail he gets hooked up in this crazy football scheme. There will be a cons vs guards game, where the guards are supposed to win. If you didn't figure out that the cons win you should make a point not to breed.

The movie was half comedy/half drama. It was your typical underdog wins the game story.

What I thought: It was fun of cliches and pretty predictable. It was also pretty funny and a good time. It wasn't Happy Gilmore. After the show Erik mentioned that it didn't focus on Sandler too much, which is probably why it was a decent movie. I agree.

Should you see it? Yeah, but talk a drunk friend into renting it.

Star Wars (Part 3)
2005-05-19

The guys (and dpatticake) got together last night and saw the midnight opening of Star Wars. Before going to see the movie we all met up at DuClaws and made fun of each other while drinking adult beverages. Then we went to the movie.

Plot: If you don't know the plot already don't worry about reading the rest of this review. If you're still reading you know that there was a SW 2 and a SW 4. This movie filled in the gaps between the two movies.

What I thought: The gaps were filled. The story is complete. Finally.

The movie started slow. It got better, but it wasn't anything to get all hot and bothered about. It filled in all the gaps and finished the story. I definitely had a much better time at DuClaws then at the movie.

Should you see it? I don't need to answer this question.
